Live From Telluride

If you’ve ever read The Life Outside you’d know that I’m one of the hosts of the Outside Film Festival, a show that features some of the world’s greatest independent documentary films. Clearly it’s a pretty sweet gig since I’m currently writing this post from Telluride, Colorado, where I’m filming the second half of Outside Television’s coverage of Mountainfilm. The festival has been here for more than 30 years and after covering its lineup of socially responsible films over Memorial Day weekend, I’m back in this vibrant mountain town with friend and co-host Lynsey Dyer to wrap it all up.

As you can see in the photos we’re having a great time, but it’s not just the good company that’s putting us in a chipper mood—it’s the inspiring lineup of films that we get to report on for the show. Films like Nico’s Challenge, about a 15-year-old boy born with one leg who summits Mount Kilimanjaro with his father, Carl. Or Flathead Wild, a film by director Trip Jennings, which uncovers efforts to preserve the Flathead region of British Colombia, Canada from strip mining. Or Somewhere Near Tapachula, about an orphanage in Mexico that’s helped hundreds of children break the destructive cycle of drug addiction by introducing them to surfing.

Of course it doesn’t hurt that Telluride has a thriving music and arts scene. The popular jam band Phish just played here last week and everyone is still abuzz about the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, which passed through the town in June. Pair that with stellar restaurants and cafés (barbecue at Fat Alley and lattes at The Steaming Bean, anyone?) and Telluride has a successful recipe for all things good. Our coverage of Mountainfilm’s inspiring documentaries will begin this November, but until then, you can see what’s in store by visiting Mountainfilm.org. In the meantime don't forget to check in every Tuesday for more of The Life Outside right here on OutsideTelevision.com.
