In case you have been wondering where I disappeared to for the last few weeks, I have been in Active/Outdoor Tradeshow Land. From Outdoor Retailer in Salt Lake City to ISPO in Munich, I have put some serious miles under my belt, reporting on the latest trends in the market.
This is, by far, the busiest time of year for our industry as manufacturers, reps, retailers, designers and editors jump on the tradeshow train for 3 solid weeks. They are on a mission to stock their stores and develop collections that will appeal to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Trends that influence the Active Market are more important than ever, as consumers are aware that they have options, in terms of quality, price and aesthetic. So basically, it has become mandatory that designers step up their game and offer next level products.
Some of the major points of discussion “on the floor” this season, included sustainability and responsible manufacturing, ultra-lightweight insulated outerwear (I cannot get enough of Patagonia's new pullover Ultralight Down Shirt), barefoot running (the EVOSKIN by Inov-8 is literally made of hospital-grade molded silicon) and of course authenticity and brand heritage. Another huge topic was avalanche safety…which in turn, has created a niche category for gear and accessories. From beacons to packs, almost every major player in the game, offered innovative product that caters to an extreme lifestyle. My top picks included, the four antenna beacon, with GPS and rechargeable batteries (first beacon with rechargeable batteries btw) from Pieps and the R.A.S Ride backpack from Mammut, that features a 150 liter balloon and a refillable aluminum and steel cylinder that is TSA safe.
In a sea of booths and gimmicks, one of my favorite initiatives, was the on-site outerwear and baselayer recycling stations by PYUA at ISPO (this is how garments come full-circle, and end up back in their original state as polyester and nylon fibers). All and all it was a super successful few weeks, and I can’t wait to see amazing product hit retail next season. Get your gear on people!
